Here are some simple rules. A diabetic should avoid:
1, All ultra-processed foods. If you can buy it in a convenience store, or in a frozen
section of a supermarket don˙t eat it. If it comes packaged, read the label like a hawk.
Among packaged foods, look for items with no more than three ingredients. If you see a
long list of ingredients containing names you would not recognize in a kitchen don˙t eat
it.
2. Breaded meats. I.e., no fried chicken dredged in flour.
3. All food made from any grain or root vegetables (potatoes, pies, cakes, pastries,
bread, pasta, rice, etc.)
4. Any sweetened drinks. Drink water and unsweetened tea or coffee only.
5. Any solid food that tastes sweet.
A diabetic should eat almost entirely fat and protein. So meat, fish, eggs, high fat dairy
(cream, butter, ghee, buttermilk, high fat cheese and yogurt). Green vegetables that
grow above ground (cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, etc.), avocado, coconut or olive oil,
nuts. Fermented foods are an excellent choice.
You will hear some saying foods with carbs are fine as long as the diabetic takes their
meds. While blood sugar may stay controlled with enough medication, it doesn˙t mean
those foods are good in the long run. The less high carb food you eat, the less you spike
insulin, the less medication is needed to control blood sugar.
Many type 2 diabetics can eliminate medication entirely, and many type 1 diabetics can
reduce the dose of insulin they need and maintain far more stable blood sugar by
radically reducing carbohydrate.
