• Why is prostate cancer so common?

From Mike Dippel@999:1/1 to All on Sat Feb 21 22:19:46 2026
Prostate cancer is common because the prostate is highly sensitive to aging-related
hormonal changes, especially lifelong exposure to testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.

Genetic factors, longer life expectancy, inflammation, and widespread screening also
increase how often it is detected.

Prostate cancer˙s high incidence reflects a combination of biology, demographics,
detection practices, and environment. Key drivers:

    Biology and aging

Prostate tissue is hormonally active: androgens (testosterone and dihydrotestosterone)
stimulate cell proliferation, creating opportunities for replication errors over decades.

Accumulation of somatic mutations and epigenetic alterations with age increases
    malignant transformation risk.

The prostate˙s microanatomy (glandular epithelium, areas of chronic inflammation)
    predisposes to focal neoplastic changes.

Prostate cancer is common because the prostate naturally grows with age, and factors like
hormones, genetics, chronic inflammation, and diet high in animal fats increase the risk of
    abnormal cell growth.

Longer lifespans and widespread PSA screening also contribute to higher detection rates.

Yes, I like many men my age have BPH. Benign Prostate Hypoplasty. MY PSA is constantly being checked just in case! I was on Prostate medication, but it majorly interfered with ejaculations. I don't need to catheterize as long as I'm not on anti-cholinergics.

I don't know of many males who "enjoy" the "prostate check".

I saw one meme on Facebook that said "I hate these self help
medical deals. I had to check my prostate, and now I can't find
    my cellphone". <G>
