    Fact: Diabetes is the condition which can only be controlled, not cured

    Normal blood sugar range: 70-110 mg/dL

    Increase in blood sugar level beyond >125 mg/dL, this condition is called as diabetes.

    Types of Diabetes:
    1. Diabetes Insipidus (DI)
    World prevalence is just 0.003%
    Causes: deficiency/resistance of ADH (Anti-Diuretic-Hormone)

    2. Diabetes mellitus (DM)

    There are 2 types of DM

    Type 1. IDDM : Insulin dependent
    Type 2. NIDDM: Non Insulin dependent
    Type 3. Gestational DM: during pregnancy

    Most prevalent life style disease is NIDDM

    Type 2 Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM)

    Prevalence is: 95% in all types

    More prone to obese and overweight people

    Causes:

    Insufficient insulin production
    Insulin resistance or sensitivity
    Management:

    Drugs: Oral anti-hyperglycemic agents (e.g. Metformin etc.)
    Nutrition: low sugar diet
    Exercise: helps to decrease blood sugar level
    Test

    Fasting blood sugar
    Post prandial blood sugar
    A1C test is a blood test: average of 3 months
    Complications

    Slow wound healing
    Diabetic foot ulcers
    Long term complications

    Diabetic retinopathy: damage to the tiny blood vessels in your eyes
    Diabetic neuropathy: damage to nerves
    Diabetic nephropathy: damage to kidneys
    Stroke
