World Otter Day traces its origins back to a 2014 initiative by the UK-based International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF). The IOSF is recognized as one of the world's leading conservation organizations for otters, dedicated to the global preservation, protection, and care of these animals. The initiators place primary emphasis on the event's international scope as a global day for otters. This focus is grounded in the fact that the thirteen species of these mammals-with the exception of Antarctica and Australia-inhabit every continent but are, critically, highly endangered (see also the list of further links below).
