• FTN planning

From Khronos@HOBBYSPC/CWSHACK to All on Tue Jun 2 11:24:04 2026
    Hi,
I've been doing some prep work for getting things ready to allow this qwk network to be accessible over the FTN protocol as well.
One thing I noticed we need to do is to make sure that the echos have distinct names.
We need to make sure they do not have the same name as another echo from another FTN.
The example for this is SYNCHRONET.
We should call ours SBBS or something like that.

Doesn't the internal code determine where the mail gets dropped to?

    In this case "FIDONET_GUITAR":
    FIDONET_GUITAR GUITAR 1:229/426

So can't we have "HOBBYSPC_GUITAR" and the message would route in the correct areas?

That's the way I understand it. I have a few same name ares that don't conflict with each other. The AREAS.bbs file is what does all the routing of the incoming mail.

    The internal code would be

    FIDONET_

    OR

    HOBBYSPC_

and then the name of the area -> ie: "GUITAR"

This could be correct, but I'm the kind of guy where it could cause issues in some situations in ways we don't understand later.
I was trying to setup a secondary Fidonet feed and ran into this issue where mail came in from my secondary feed first and got routed to my primary as an incoming mesage causing them dupes.

I think differently. The odds of someone else on the planet picking "SBBS" as a sub name in a FTN is much greater than picking "HobbySpc_SBBS". As long as the area.bbs file has the correct FTN address associated to the internal prefix and internal sub code it should route. I ran into the same thing you are when I was learning FTN's! You gotta make sure the FTN node addresses are in the right place for each menage groups otherwise you will get dupes, or bad areas.

Here's a snip of only 2 subs each my FTN's in my area.bbs file: (sorry if the formatting is not lined up)

BTW - those Internal Prefixes and Codes are not the Long and Short names of the message sub. You can name them anything you want and can be totally different than what the internal pointers are.

Biggie-B your right, but it doesn't matter to me if y'all think we need to change the names. I am as cool as the underside of the pillow. Just let me know what and how y'all want to do it.

I know this may be off topic, but how much fun was chat night? Do you guys want to have another chat night this week? I'll see if I can pull in a good friend of mine. He runs a bbs, and he is an active bbs user too. His alias is baldilocks hahahaha.
We should have like 2 or three chat nights a week. Not only would it let us get to know each other faster, and better, but we can collaborate on different ideas. "Ideas about each other's board mods and mods for HobbySpace all around."

The only thing I need now is an admin account on the hub system to setup a peer between my system and the hub to test out a feed.
Once I get one node going the rest will be much easier then I can teach the process for adding the rest.

It would be best to have a Synchronet admin account.

wait what is your hobbyspace qwk acount? I want to make sure I am doing the right one. Also do you have a qwk account and regular user account, or do you need a regular user account so that i can give that account full sysop access?

If you make the khronos account a regular account with admin privs that'll work just fine.
My cwshack one is the qwk id.

yeah the port is open. I played around on it a little bit, but dude there is no air conditioner at this house. It was around 2:30, 3:00 p.m. and I couldn't stand it anymore. I went next door to the practice space. We call it the fun house, it's where we write our music. It has a window unit in there. My dog has a short snout so heat and her do not go well together. It was about 95 degrees is this house. The wifi and internet do not reach the fun house. So I just sit in there in complete silence relaxing with my dog.

Our air broke last year and our apartment got to 92 degrees each day starting after 4pm until the sun went down. I know how AWFUL that is and how much it SUCKS!! It took a week for them to fix it. Those were the days we got over 100 degrees. I was so lethargic just sitting around doing noting from the extreme heat. I thought I was gonna die!

You see, you knew your air was going to be fixed right? Well here, this air conditioner isn't going to get fixed...ever. So I need to get a good check one week, really soon, and find a window unit. It doesn't have to be super great, powerful, ect. It can be a used cheap 200 dollar window unit or something. Idc. I just don't want to spend a bunch of money on something, that I wont end up needing in the long run.
