IRC PORT
From

What is the benefit of me having the IRC Port 6667 open to my BBS? It's been open since I went online and sometimes I see a connection that's be established for 10 hours or more from unknown host names. I can't kill their connection unless I restart the entire BBS.
How does having this port open benefit my BBS?
Thanks!

Well, I mean, do you want people to be able to connect to the IRC daemon on your board? If not, might want to disable that -- the connections you see are likely randoms connecting by virtue of the round-robin nature of the network when one connects to irc.synchro.net.
closing that port would create issues in that when your system is picket, the user wouldn't be able to actually connect.. unless the code on DM's end compensates for such...
But that's the key thing... that and people choosing to directly connect to your system as opposed to another, if they wish.

Thanks for the explanation and the clarification! I appreciate it. I guess I'll keep it open, I like helping out the great good :)

It's synchronet's built in irc server. You can disable it if you want. I disabled mine because of hack bots. From the looks of it, they were hanging out in your irc server too. We can enable them for chat night, but I wouldn't keep it open. I used to run it, and used it, not anymore unfortunately

I tell ya what. Go in your irc server with a client, or the bbs and see who is in there. If it's bot's ban the ip. You could do that, instead of closing the port.

I keep seeing this DNS address which I never set up and it doesn't resolve. "jjambbs.synchro.net'. Where is this set?
"Welcome to the Synchronet IRC Service, BiggieB!~
biggieb@jjambbs.synchro.net"
&
"Your host is jjambbs.synchro.net, running version SynchronetIRCd-2.0"

Just one of the many SBBS instances on the network. I don't totally know how IRC network routing behaves, but that's what that is -- a link in the networke. Absolutely harmless -- the Synchronet IRC network uses those same QWK ID based subdomain setups (commonly used for dynamicdns) for the IRC server routing, since those domains would be what VERT knows other boards as in the crazy behind the scenes stuff DM has going on.

check your modops.ini file or what ever it's called. I'ts in your main synchronet control panel. File then edit, and it's modops.ini or modopts.ini, Can't remember the name, but it's very close to that, you can't miss it lol. I had to take an old address out of that file before.

I thought it was just an irc server, being ran through synchronet bbs software. I was under the impression it wasn't tied to synchronet's irc server, but locally on the bbs the irc server is running on. Since, that port has to be opened for it to work. I'll have to do some reading on this. Can you direct me to the documentation that explains it please sir?

As far as I understand it, the irc server is stand alone. Here is what google a.i said, it explains it very well.
Enabling the Synchronet IRC server (ircd.js) creates a local IRC server on your BBS. It is initially standalone, meaning channels and user chats remain strictly local to your system unless you manually configure it to connect or "link" to a wider IRC network. How it Operates and Where to Check Settings:Local By Default: The server runs independently, listening for connections on your network (usually TCP port 6667). Your BBS users can chat, and anyone else can connect to your BBS's IP/Hostname using any standard IRC client. The Synchronet Network: If you want to connect your local server to the global Synchronet IRC Network (where boards gather in rooms like #synchronet), you must configure it to link outward. By default, it operates completely isolated.SCFG Configuration: You can manage your BBS's default IRC behavior via the Synchronet Configuration utility. Navigate to Chat Section options in SCFG to edit settings, such as forcing your users to auto-join specific default channels when they connect.Advanced Settings: Server configuration is primarily handled using the ircdcfg.js script to set up server-specific parameters, or via the ircd.ini and services.ini files located in your BBS ctrl directory. To tweak exactly how your users interact with this service, consult the official Synchronet IRC Daemon Documentation or edit your Services Initialization file.

That could be it. JJAMBBS is my QWK account at VERT for Dove-Net. I worked pretty hard to not have a DDNS and I just don't like seeing anything but my domain jerseyjam.com when it comes to listing my BBS in any way.

Yeah go to file and edit, and see if you see a modops.ini in there or something with a similar name, and edit that file. It has some options, you may be interested in turning on and off.

People use IRC? Wow that's legacy. I thought surely IRC had faded. Glad to see people still using it. Remember ICQ? I wonder if people still use that?
...I've always been a bit maturer that what I am.

As always, check the synchronet wiki
https://wiki.synchro.net/service:ircd - some aspects are an enigma to me and so I've inferred other behaviors, but yeah, said docu has info.

let me refresh myself and read the irc document again. It's been a while since I have read that one. I have read the docs a BUNCH! Some of it makes no since to me. Heaven forbid you get confused about something in the docs and ask a question, on dove-net, or irc. Lol Dudes are real jerks on there.

Oh seriously, yeah, some of the documentation is just... insane. Thankfully that IRC doc seems decent enough.
And yeah, if you don't ask for help in JUST the right way... and that's IF they want to try to help at all..... although DM has gotten a bit better recently, compared to my experience a few years ago.

That was a very interesting read.... darn.....I need to read more of these docs. cool shit.
I managed to fix one of my issues with my QWK DNS name used for IRC not resolving at all by turning on dynamics dns for the IRC. It's now in the timed events running twice a day.
Command at menu:
";EXEC ?dyndns <pass>"
...Or turn on Dynamic DNS in Timed events.
"jjambbs.synchro.net" now resolves to my IP. Nice.
More learning to do :)
