• Summer is here

From digimaus@618:618/1 to All on Wed Jun 24 19:34:57 2026
    Hi everyone,

The honeymoon with spring is over here. Monday, it's going to be 90F (32C)
and Tuesday, with the heat index, it will feel like 107F (42C). I hate
summer, especially here where it's muggy all summer long, yeech.

Fall is my favorite season, by far.

I only open my windows in fall in the evenings as the pollen is not as bad.

My parents recently bought me a dehumidifier and that helps a lot in the
    summer in my small apartment.

There are heat records being set in most parts of the world but I
have to say I've been hoping for some warmer weather (but let's not
    get carried away)..

The last several weeks it's been about 22c (low 70's F) during the
day and as low as 12c (54F) at night here in Central Ontario.
This week will see highs and lows most days about 28c/20c (82/68F)
which may start to feel a little warm as we are not used to it yet.

It was close to that 28c today but there was a nice breeze off
of the water (Georgian Bay) so it wasn't too bad a day, but
they say we may get thunder storms 3 or 4 days this next week
so if they don't get you one way they get you another.. B)

Here in Kentucky, what they've been talking about is how we might set
some record highest lows overnight. That could be worse that record
daytime highs because it means nothing is cooling off over night.

I'd love to have the 70s/50s weather back. Heck, 82/60s sounds good,
too. Last night, I think it got down to 73F, and will be 93F or so
    by afternoon.

Our thunderstorms were mostly last week and over the weekend. During
the weekend, we had some major flooding in a couple of parts of the
state where storms "trained" over certain areas. There are areas
that are flood prone and we expect them to flood once or twice a
year, but these areas were not those.

On the news 2 days ago they mentioned that in France it was the
hottest day ever recorded and a huge problem was that all of the
mortuaries in France were filled to capacity with over 1000 people
dying within a couple of days and people don't know what to do with
loved ones who have died from the heat.

It got up to 88f here today, feeling like almost 100f with the
humidity, and overnight it will cool off to about 77f, feeling
more like 82f. I'm not one who spends a lot of time without a
shirt on but that's been an exception today. I was also out
shopping and was very glad that my car has working air conditioning,
something I very rarely turn on..

With these type of temperatures we often get a thunderstorm later
in the evening when things start to cool off a bit. Usually there's
little rain and better behaved lightning so at least we don't lose
    our power.

I had heard that Europe in general is having an issue with heat-related deaths but didn't realize there'd been that many in just one country! I have seen some mention that in some countries (but not all), it could be legally difficult to have an air conditioner, which complicates matters.

This time last year, when it got real hot (but not quite this hot), my A/C was on the blink so I can sympathize on both counts. At least I have a basement I can hide in.

I've never had air conditioning in any house, although I remember
once long ago sleeping in a severely unfinished basement one very
hot night. Where I am now it is generally cooler than inland or in
the cities because I'm right on the shores of Georgian Bay and
any breeze coming over the water will be cooler than the air would
    normally be.

No basement here but I can easily go swimming to cool off.. B)

Well, in Spain I think it is a cultural thing. Air Conditioning is shunned for a number of reasons.

In the North of Spain the logic is it does not get hot frequently enough, and if you cannot survive the week a year it gets hot with just a cool beer, you are a pussy.

Then there is a lot of black legend regarding Air Conditioning causing diseases, because they overcool the room to the point you get actual colds. In fact a lot of people criticise AC because they believe it is unhealthy or uncomfortable.

And there is also a lot of criticism because using electrical power will destroy the planet, therefore people running Air Conditioning want to kill us all.

I have Air Conditioning at work and Air Conditioning at home and I am happy with it.

A/C is nearly a requirement here and I also have a dehumidifier since it's so damn humid here during the summer. During the winter, it's so dry that I
have a humidifier too. I try to be prepared.

I see.. I rarely turn on the air conditioning in my car and I've never
had it in any house I've owned, but I was starting to think it might
be a handy thing last night when even later at night it was still
up around 29c (84f) in the house here. I'm not too bad up to a couple
of degrees cooler than that but that was pushing it a bit, especially
since it's been cool here so far this summer and we are not really used
    to the heat yet..

I guess what qualifies as Hot depends a lot on where you live,
    what you are used to.

I remember a motorcycle trip I took to Florida once where when
I hit the road on the second day (still in Georgia) at 8am it
was already up to 40c (105f) with a long hot afternoon ride
still ahead of us. I remember it started raining when we were
about an hour from our desitination and me and my lady passenger
didn't even stop to put on rain wear. It was great having the
rain help to cool us off a bit.. and then 20 minutes after the
rain stopped, we were dry again..

I think there is some truth to this, but it is not the AC that causes it. Rather, it is being cooped up in a closed environment for too many hours without any outdoors/fresh air. I think it shows up more in Winter, when everyone is staying in the heated indoors rather than going out in the cold, as that is when "flu season" usually takes off.
