Just over a week ago, I lost my younger dog Oreo, well he was 14. I am
not sure what happened but he was eating something he found on the
beach. I could not see what it was.
We don't realise how much our pets mean to us. My older dog, Bowie, is
16 and started me off with the Chinese Crested breed. He is laying
beside me. He, like me, is lost without Oreo.
I always said that Bowie and Oreo would be my last dogs, and I stand
with this. Losing Oreo broke my heart and, in some ways, I hope I go before Bowie.
Oreo, miss you mate

Sorry to hear. It's one of the hardest things we humans can go through,
I think. I also lost one of my two dogs about 4 years ago and it still hurts. Got one left and he's 11.5 years old. Hang in there and take
good care of Bowie.

I'm sorry for your loss. I understand what you're feeling. Cancer
killed my beloved Felix at 11 years old and that was in 2022. I miss
him dearly and his loss still hurts me today.

It is the small things he used to do that I suddenly realise that I
took for granted. If I went out to the shops, when I got home, he would always be at the window. Bowie just sleeps, but then he is 16

I miss Felix greeting me (most of the time) when I came home. If I
forgot to feed him before I left, I was guanteed a greeting albeit a noisy, whiny greeting...

In the end of the day this is something we all have to deal with. The important thing is our pets live good lives and feel loved. It is always hard when I lose one, but when I look back years later and think of the 10+ years we shared together, it feels like an absolutely happy story.
Take good care of Bowie.

It makes the house feel empty, like missing something essential your home should have. It is hard to explain to people, who has never gone through

They have been my constant friends for the last 14/16 years. I do loook back and fondly remember all the happy days I had because of him

You've had them almost as long as I've known you.

At first I thought you were talking about visits to my house.
I don't monitor the activity of my gopherhole so it is hard to tell, but my hunch is "no".
through it.
I have read, in several studies, that losing a beloved pet is more stressful on a person that losing a human loved one. I'd say that for me, that's true.

I think a big part of that is the owner is responsible and is expected
to make the tough decisions, often alone and without support, and then live with them afterwards.
If your horse gets badly sick, are you going to put her down? Is she bad enough that it is better for her if it is finally over? What if she is
not that bad and actually wants to live, and you are depriving her of a few days with your haste? I have heard from Blue Cross people this sort
of thing is what makes it harder for us humans afterwards.
