Connemara Weather Summary Ĕ" June 2026
June 2026 was a month of contrasts across Connemara, with prolonged spells of unsettled Atlantic weather punctuated by a notable warm and sunny period during the fourth week of the month. While rainfall varied considerably from inland valleys to the coast, temperatures were generally close to seasonal averages before rising well above normal during the final ten days.
Temperature
Mean monthly temperatures across the region generally ranged between 14AøC and 15AøC, making June close to average overall. The warmest conditions arrived between 22nd and 26th June as high pressure became established over Ireland.
Many stations recorded their highest temperatures of the year during this spell:
* Kylemore: 32.2AøC
* Leenane: 31.7AøC
* Clifden: 30.9AøC
* Several other stations exceeded 27AøC.
Cooler nights accompanied the early part of the month, with the lowest temperatures generally falling between 7AøC and 10AøC in sheltered inland locations.
Rainfall
Rainfall distribution varied dramatically across the region owing to the mountainous terrain.
The wettest locations included:
* Leenane: 405.4 mm
* Letterfrack: over 300 mm
* Kylemore: well over 250 mm
Meanwhile more exposed coastal stations were considerably drier:
* Clifden: 135.3 mm
* Furbo: substantially lower rainfall
* Inish Bofin: comparatively moderate totals despite a very wet spell early in the month.
The heaviest daily rainfall occurred at Leenane on 7 June, when 53.6 mm fell in just 24 hours. Several western stations also recorded rainfall events exceeding 30 mm during the month.
Most stations experienced rain on more than 20 days, although many of these were light showers or drizzle rather than prolonged heavy rain.
Wind
Prevailing winds were predominantly west to southwesterly, reflecting the continued influence of Atlantic weather systems.
Average wind speeds ranged from around 2 km/h in sheltered inland valleys to approximately 9 km/h along exposed coastal sites.
The strongest gust recorded was around 53 km/h at Oughterard early in the month, while coastal stations frequently recorded gusts between 35 and 45 km/h during passing fronts.
Weather Highlights
The first half of June was dominated by frequent Atlantic weather systems bringing cool temperatures, extensive cloud and regular outbreaks of rain.
Conditions improved significantly during the middle of the month before a period of very warm weather developed between 22nd and 26th June. Temperatures climbed rapidly under sunny skies with light easterly winds, producing the warmest spell experienced so far in 2026.
The heat broke down during the final days of the month as Atlantic fronts returned from the west, bringing cooler temperatures and renewed rainfall across much of Connemara.
Monthly Summary
June 2026 will be remembered as a warm but very wet month, particularly in the mountainous districts where rainfall totals exceeded 400 mm in places. Despite the unsettled first half, the exceptional late-June warmthƒî"with temperatures exceeding 30AøC at several stationsƒî"provided one of the most significant weather events of the summer so far.
Overall, the month demonstrated the remarkable variability of ConnemaraĔTs climate, with large differences in rainfall over relatively short distances while temperatures remained fairly consistent across the region.
